The Geospatial Information Centre (GIC) was established in the Civil Engineering Department of S.R.K.R. Engineering College on 9th January, 2006. Geospatial technologies play a vital role and have a wide range of applications in respect of natural resources that include water resources, mineral resources, ocean resources, forestry and environment, agriculture & soils, disaster management, urban land use etc., Their approach and use is primarily interdisciplinary in nature and require the expertise from various engineering and science disciplines. The participation of experts from Management, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering and Economics are essential for a holistic treatment of issues related to these important spheres.
Therefore, the core mission of the Geospatial Information Centre (GIC) is to form the vital link between these interdisciplinary programmes and conduct high quality research in the areas of natural resources development, management and conservation, environment and ecology, coastal dynamics, etc. using Remote Sensing (RS), GIS and GPS technologies coupled with conventional data sets. The centre carries Research & Development both in core and applied research studies by identifying issues at ground level having social relevance and national importance, requiring immediate attention. These research and development activities are being conducted with the help of the research advisory Committee of Civil Engineering Department and more particularly with the guidance of Prof. Dr. K.R.K Raju, who has put in several years of rich experience in these areas and still involved in the promotion of these programmes.
The vision is to develop the centre ultimately as one of the prime research centres both on national and international level regarding geospatial information science.
Conduct research in areas of land and water resources, environment and ecology, coastal dynamics etc.,
Recommend / suggest remedial measures /action plans for implementation
Collaboration and interaction with state, central and international research institutions
Dissemination of scientific information, creating awareness and contribute directly to society
Present / publish research results and conduct seminars
Familiarise / train the students in the state of the art technologies and current research trends
Create digital database of multi-thematic information
Ultimately develop the centre and hence the college as one of the prime research organisations in rural environs
The centre is housed in an area of 3000 sq.ft. The voluminous spatial data generated on various resource parameters under various research programmes of sponsored and in-house studies as well as individual’s research study in the last two and half decades is put into an archive/file in the centre. The centre has collected/generated extensive datasets and developed a digital / GIS database of various natural resources and man-made infrastructure of West Godavari district, land and water resources of Godavari and Krishna river basins, irrigation maps of Andhra Pradesh etc., as a part of its in-house R&D activity. Further, hard prints of some of this data have been generated to give an opportunity to visualize the resource maps at an enhanced view for the use of student projects, workshops, conferences and also for various stakeholders and other sections of the society who are visiting the Centre frequently and regularly.
The GIC is endowed with both software and hardware facilities to undertake the studies on micro- and macro-levels.
The Centre plans to expand its areas of research in coastal dynamics, impacts of intensive land use practices on deltaic environment, coastal erosion/accretion, drainage congestion, development of flow models of irrigation waters and back water intrusion, development of digital database of deltas (4D) of Godavari and Krishna, geospatial archaeology etc., For this GIC envisions formulating integrated, multidisciplinary and inter-institutional research programmes in collaboration with national and international premier institutions (umbrella group). GIC is collaborating with the following institutions.
